Niu Bi Zi, drawn using Chinese brush with Chinese ink, was a funny Chinese gentleman full of typical Chinese wisdom. He was able to take on many different roles in society as well as the characters in the Chinese literary classics, to mock the prevailing political and social situation in China in the 1930s. The cartoons like the one shown here often made the readers laugh but with a sense of bitter resignation to their existing plight.

These cartoons appeared in newspapers and magazines both for adults and children. Huang Yao had also published them in booklet form. Niu Bi Zi book1 to 5, Granting happiness from Nui Bi Zi and "If Nui Bi Zi were..." book 1 and 2. These 8 booklets were then combined and republished as the complete set of Nui Bi Zi 1 and 2, by the Shangdong Huabao Publishing House in 1999.
